Description

THE HOUSE ON THE CLIFF Written by Franklin W. Dixon and illustrated by Walter S. Rogers. It includes an introduction by Leslie McFarlane. First published by Grosset & Dunlap in 1927, this book is a facsimile edition published by Applewood Books of Bedford, Massachusetts. Printed in 1991; it shows that it is the 7th printing of this particular edition. PUBLISHER’S NOTE: Applewood Books is pleased to reissue the original Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew books, just as they were originally published—the Hardy Boys in 1927 and Nancy Drew in 1930. In 1959, the books were condensed and rewritten, and since then, the original editions have been out of print. Much has changed in America since the books were first issued. The modern reader may be delighted with the warmth and exactness of the language, the wholesome innocence of the characters, their engagement with the natural world, or the nonstop action without the use of violence; but just as well, the modern reader may be extremely uncomfortable with the racial and social stereotyping, the roles women play in these books, or the use of phrases or situations which may conjure up some response in the modern reader that was not felt by the reader of the times. For good or bad, we Americans have changed quite a bit since these books were first issued. Many readers will remember these editions with great affection and will be delighted with their return; others will wonder why we just don’t let them disappear. These books are part of our heritage. They are a window on our real past. DESCRIPTION: 212 pages + 6 page of ads in back 7 5/8 x 5 1/8 inches facsimile edition—hardcover with dustjacket CONDITION: This hard-cover book is in very good condition with a fine dustjacket. The paper shows little to no age-toning. The hinges and binding are excellent with no loose or missing pages. The colorful dust jacket is excellent and without wear, marks, tears or creases.
