ABOUT WILL BARNET Will Barnet was a 20th Century American artist, printmaker and teacher, best known for his paintings and prints created in his distinctively flat, stylized aesthetic. Throughout his classically elegant depictions of both everyday life and dreams, Barnet tinged his work with symbolic meaning. His paintings often feature solitary figures with birds set amidst an ominous interior or landscape. Born May 25, 1911 in Beverly, MA, Will Barnet studied at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and later at the Art Student’s League of New York, where he met the influential artist Stuart Davis. Today, Barnet’s art is in the permanent collections of The National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., The Museum of Modern Art, New York, The Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York among others. With a career spanning 80 years, Will Barnet once remarked, “Painting is almost like a religious experience, which should go on and on. Age just gives you the freedom to do some things you've never done before. Great work can come at any stage of your life.” Will Barnet had his first solo exhibition in 1935 at the Eighth Street Playhouse in New York City. In 1939 Will Barnet was included in American Art Today at the New York World’s Fair. Over an 8 decade career, Will Barnet had no fewer than 80 one-man gallery exhibitions. In 1941 Will Barnet began a 50-year teaching career, which started at New York's Art Students League and continued at Cooper Union, New York and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, as well as summer courses taught all over the United States and Canada. In addition to an 8 decade career creating art, Will Barnet had a storied teaching career; Will Barnet's students are a who's who of contemporary master artists including Cy Twombly, Tom Wesselmann, Eva Hesse, James Rosenquist, Mark Rothko and Donald Judd to name a few. ART DEALER JOSEPH K. LEVENE REMINISCES ABOUT WILL BARNET Will Barnet, a renowned 20th-century master artist, passed away on November 13, 2012, in New York at the age of 101. Joseph K. Levene, President, Joseph K. Levene Fine Art, Ltd., had the privilege of personally knowing Will and his wife, Elena, for decades. Among the many cherished memories, one stands out—an inspiring dinner I had with Elena and Will. The dinner was remarkable as Will was about to celebrate his 101st birthday, I was astounded by Will's sharp intellect and keen insights. At 100 years old, he displayed remarkable articulateness, having attended more gallery exhibitions than me. He was unabashedly articulate and even welcomed debates about Pop Art, which he detested. It was an unforgettable evening, as few people have the opportunity to dine with someone 100 years old!
