Markings: Impressed very faint George Jones Crescent Marking 6721 in red glaze This is a rare 19th-century Aesthetic Movement hand-painted fish plate produced by George Jones & Sons. Sometimes called “Underwater Life” or “Coastal”. Complete underwater marine scene detailing a flounder/flatfish, flying fish near the water line, a hermit crab inside a murex snail shell, and various seaweed and coral formations. Characteristically framed by a soft turquoise/aqua-colored rim, a signature color palette common to George Jones' coastal and majolica-style dishware. It is frighteningly reminiscent of Minton’s Naturalist pattern but still follows Western convention in how the creatures are laid out. While it has some close-up flaws, it is stunning when hanging on a wall. Particularly attractive for a sea themed room.
