Civil War Era Gorham Sterling Silver Card Case w/Original Box Retailed by George Sharp, Atlanta Georgia When one thinks of George Sharp (Danville, KY, 1857- late 1860s, Atlanta, GA from 1871) as a Silversmith, one thinks of the unusual ball-end flatware his shop produced. But forevermore, I will associate George Sharp with this extremely rare find. Manufactured by Gorham for Mr Sharp's retail establishment in Atlanta Georgia, may I offer this Sterling Silver (hallmarked as pictured) card case created towards the end of the American Civil War. In a Victorian Aesthetic design with engraved initials of TSS or JSS. Size is 3-9/16" x 2-3/16"; weight is 55 grams (1.5 ounces). Chain length is about 15". While the case shows no dents or dings or repairs, there is what I call a "light impression" to the front and to the back, maybe 1 impression that is a sharp line and 2 that are light. The marks probably don't show in the photos as they are so light. What is so unusual about this offering is that the card case still resides in its original leather covered wooden presentation box WITH all the jewelers notations on the bottom of the box. The inside of the box bears George Sharp Jr's imprinted name in gold lettering; the inside bottom of the box shows discoloration and maybe a touch of shattering to the interior silk. Lid snaps shut as it should. The bottom of the box reads, if I am interpreting correctly - first tag "$21 Cwod Case, S.F. Esq. 1/10" then another tag that reads "No. 18.00." Gorham cases are expensive depending on their design, even more so if the original presentation case is around and even MORE so, if the retailer is a one that made a name for himself albeit for a short time. I guess that's why his offerings are so scarce. A wonderful bit of history here and a rare find I think! 5068Robin/BX Postage quoted for this item on its own INCLUDES insurance. * * * BUY IT NOW ! ******************************** TERMS ITEM CONDITION I have been doing EBAY for 21 years now and I know what I am doing when it comes to selling.
