It is called "Akahada-yaki" because it was made using clay from Akahadayama in Nara (now known as Gojoyama). It is said that Hidenaga, the Lord of Koriyama Castle and the Grand Chancellor (Dainagon), who was the younger brother of Toyotomi Hideyoshi, invited potters from Tokoname to establish this pottery tradition. Akahada-yaki is also renowned as one of the "Seven Kilns of Enshū" and is a highly esteemed traditional craft.
