This is a beautiful Wilcox and Gibbs antique, all original, hand crank sewing machine with a serial number of A457674, which dates it to the year 1891. Founded in 1857 by James E.A. Gibbs and James Willcox, the Willcox & Gibbs Sewing Machine Company produced some of the most reliable and iconic chain-stitch machines of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Known for their distinctive "G" shaped frame and "twisted" chain stitch, these machines were favored for their simplicity and quality, with many remaining functional over 150 years later. This little gem is functional but needs a thorough cleaning and oiling. The leather belt needs to be replaced because it has stretched out. There is slight damage to the wooden base on one side and there is no case. There is a crack on the base of the machine that runs that runs the length of the machine. It does not show on the top but is visible on the sides. It would need to be repaired. Personal note: I received this as a gift from a family friend when I was a little girl in 1954. It has been stored indoors for 70 years.
