Description
FROM MADEIRA WITH LOVE....! Found in an estate liquidation on the island of Madeira in Portugal, that of a retired antiques dealer. Large hand painted vintage ceramic rooster, considered the unofficial mascot of Portugal. This is a vintage example, larger than most, standing 11 inches tall. I inserted a standard size playing card in one photo as a reference for size. The condition is good, free of chips, cracks or repairs. Some crazing in the glaze was detected. The red comb and red throat wattles are cold painted. Those areas are showing some spotty wear with some losses, see photos. There is no back stamp, however, it has been identified as a "Barcelos Rooster" symbol of Life and Good Luck, made in Portugal by the Alcobaca Factory. Almost every Madeiran Household will have a rooster figure represented in one form or another, often given as a house warming gift. This is a hand crafted item and will show some manufacturing crudities, atypical for this type of ware. MUCH OBLIGED
